Grandparenting ? The Christmas Question Grandparents Fear Most ...

You will not be a grandparent for long before you are faced with this most troubling question. It could come anytime from one of your grandchildren. It happens most frequently at Christmas. You may try to ignore the question but most grandchildren will persist till you respond. No, nothing to do with Santa Claus.

Grandparents really don?t need to worry too much if they will get to see their grandchildren. They will get to visit them any time their child has custody of the kids. Depending on how often the grandparents have seen the grandchildren before the divorce, this may or may not make too much of an impact. Now, if grandparents have been seeing their grandchildren every day, there will probably be a change. They can deal with this by discussing the issue with their child.

For grandparents, this stage is heartbreaking but not uncommon for any child. Many grandparents don?t remember that the child goes through a huge transition from living with their parents to living with their grandparents. This transition can produce the same behavior of culture shock in a child. Recently, there was a grandmother who has been retired for a while, who opened her door one morning to four of her grandchildren waiting on the doorstep for her.

Grandparents can help the grandchildren during the divorce proceedings. Children during this time are adjusting to a lot of change and they have all sorts of conflicting feelings. Grandparents can calmly talk to the children and allow the children to express themselves. They can reassure the children of their love for them. This can make a safe haven for the children during this tumultuous time.

A grandparent can help their child through the custody case by helping them find information and suggesting things to do with the case. They can look up information about mediation and educate themselves on the best ways to create parenting plans. This can take some of the stress off of the person in the divorce.

Grandparents have important relationships to maintain with their own children and the grandchildren. They can be such a positive influence during divorce for everyone. This is good for the grandchildren and for the entire family.
