A time crystal would spontaneously break what Wilczek calls "the mother of all symmetries"?the symmetry of time translation, which holds physical laws remains the same regardless of what time it is. A time crystal would change with time but keep coming back to the same form it began with, like a clock whose moving hands periodically return to their original positions.

The difference from an ordinary clock or other periodic process is that a time crystal, as with a spatial crystal, would be a state of minimum possible energy. At first glance, that poses a contradiction. A time crystal by definition must change with time in order to break time translation symmetry. But a system with minimum energy ordinarily can't move. If it could, then additional energy could still be extracted, until the system achieved a true minimum energy, a motionless state.

"At first I thought this was easy, then that it was impossible," Wilczek noted in a recent lecture at Arizona State University at Tempe. "Now I think it's neither easy nor impossible."

Karzai says Afghanistan joins Taliban peace talks: report (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? The U.S. and Afghan governments have begun secret three-way talks with the Taliban, Afghan President Hamid Karzai told The Wall Street Journal, in a move that could bolster U.S.-led efforts to convene fully fledged peace talks within months.

Karzai's government had previously been excluded from early, exploratory contacts between the Taliban and the United States, with the insurgents seen as resisting the involvement of a local administration they regard as a puppet of Washington.

But the Journal quoted Karzai on Thursday as saying the Taliban were "definitively" interested in a peace settlement to end the 10-year war in Afghanistan, and that all three sides were now involved in discussions.

"People in Afghanistan want peace, including the Taliban. They're also people like we all are. They have families, they have relatives, they have children, they are suffering a tough time," the Journal quoted Karzai as saying in an interview conducted on Wednesday in the Afghan capital.

"There have been contacts between the U.S. government and the Taliban, there have been contacts between the Afghan government and the Taliban, and there have been some contacts that we have made, all of us together, including the Taliban."

The newspaper said Karzai had declined to specify the location of the talks or go into further detail, saying he feared this could damage the process.

Karzai's comments have been published as he prepares to meet the leaders of neighboring Pakistan and Iran in Islamabad on Thursday for a summit set to focus on security issues, including the Taliban insurgency and support for it from within Pakistan.

Washington wants to accelerate the fragile talks with the Taliban so it can announce serious peace negotiations at a NATO summit in May, officials say, in what would be a welcome bright spot in Western efforts to end the war in Afghanistan.

The United States hopes it can declare a start to authentic political negotiations between the Afghan government and the Taliban at the May 20-21 summit in Chicago, after a year of initial, uncertain contacts with militant representatives.

It would be a needed victory for the White House and its NATO partners in Afghanistan as they struggle to contain a resilient insurgency and train a local army while moving to bring their troops home over the next three years.

But eventually it reveals itself to be a character drama about the way the past shapes us and our inability to escape it, no matter how convincingly we believe we've transformed ourselves. Matthias Schoenaerts gives a fierce and frightening turn as Jacky, a steroid-addicted cattle rancher who works out an arrangement with some meat-trading mobsters, only to try and back out when an investigating federal agent is gunned down. This sequence of events forces him to revisit a horrific incident from his childhood 20 years ago, as well as the people who were crucial to that pivotal moment. Schoenaerts turns Jacky into a hulking beast given to volatile fits of rage, but he also makes you feel his character's loneliness, awkwardness and a desperate need to be loved. "The Secret World of Arrietty" ? This latest from Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli also is a pleasant antidote to the siege mentality of so many Hollywood cartoons, whose makers aim to occupy every instant of the audience's attention with an assault of noise and images. Slow, stately, gentle and meditative, the film is a marvel of image and color, its old-fashioned pen-and-ink frames vividly bringing to life the world of children's author Mary Norton's "The Borrowers." Directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, with sound designer Gary Rydstrom directing a Hollywood voice cast for the English-language version, the film follows the adventures of tiny teen Arrietty (Bridgit Mendler) and her parents (Amy Poehler and Will Arnett), who live off things scavenged from the oversized human world above. Befriended by a sickly human youth (David Henrie) and menaced by a busybody housekeeper (Carol Burnett), Arrietty stands at the center of a sweet, chaste, sort-of first love story told with warm simplicity and grandly fluid visuals. "This Means War" ? Having great-looking actors who actually can act makes this noisy romp more tolerable than it ought to be. It's essentially a love-triangle version of "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" rendered even more bombastic in the hands of "Charlie's Angels" director McG. Still, the sight of Pine and Hardy one-upping each other for this woman's affections through ridiculously elaborate dates and outright stalking (with the help of government resources) has its amusing moments. And McG unsurprisingly keeps the action humming at a nearly nonstop pace. All in all, it's not an entirely insufferable distraction. Chelsea Handler shows up as Witherspoon's wisecracking, married best friend living vicariously through her dating adventures, which is even more implausible than the film's outsized stunts. Further support for a role of synaptic proteins in autism spectrum disorders

A new study combines genetic and neurobiological approaches to confirm that synaptic mutations increase the risk of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). It also highlights a role for modifier genes in these disorders. Published in PLoS Genetics, this research was conducted by researchers at the Institut Pasteur, the Paris Diderot University, the Robert Debr? Hospital, the Gillberg Neuropsychiatry centre, Ulm University and the Centre National de G?notypage, in collaboration with other institutions in Europe.

ASDs are a heterogeneous group of neurodevelopmental disorders with a complex inheritance pattern characterized by impairments in social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior. ASDs appear before the age of three years and affect 1/100 children, with a higher risk for males than for females. Several genes involved in ASD have been identified in patients with ASD, but only recently have we started to learn about their effects on neuronal functions and their interaction with other genetic variations.

In their new study, Leblond and collaborators identified mutations altering SHANK2, a gene that encodes a scaffolding protein located at synapses (contacts between neuronal cells). The researchers showed that several of the mutations observed in patients reduced the number of synapses in neuronal cell cultures. Further genomic analysis of three patients carrying SHANK2 deletions identified additional rare genomic imbalances, previously associated with other neuropsychiatric disorders, that could act as modifier genes by modulating the disorder.

These results emphasise the importance of synaptic gene dysfunction in ASD and also highlight a role for modifier genes, confirming a "multiple hit model" for ASD. "A better knowledge of these genetic interactions will be necessary to understand the complex inheritance pattern of ASD", concludes Thomas Bourgeron, an author on the paper.
