Apple's first App Store malware now history

6 hrs.

A malicious app that made its way into Apple's App Store, and if downloaded then went ahead and?uploaded a user's phonebook to a remote server, has been removed by Apple. It's believed that the app was the first significant piece of malware to land in the App Store in the four years since it opened.

The app, a contacts utility program?named, "Find and Call," was ejected from the App Store?by Apple late Thursday. "Find and Call"?also found its way into Android's Google Play store, and Google removed it from there as well?Thursday.

Kaspersky Lab discovered the perils of "Find and Call," which includes a Trojan to do the dirty work. Once the user launches the app, Kaspersky says, "he?will be asked to register in the app using his email address and cellphone number (both fields won?t be checked for validity). If user wants to 'find friends in a phone book' his?phone book data will be secretly (no EULA/ terms of usage/notifications) uploaded" to a remote server.

The user, Kaspersky says, will be able to continuing using the app, but at the same time:

... the application steals data from the device (phone book and cellphone numbers) which are uploaded to a remote server to be used for SMS spam campaigns. Each phone book entry will receive SMS spam message offering to click on the URL and download this ?Find and Call? application. It is worth mentioning that the ?from? field contains the user?s cellphone number. In other words, people will receive an SMS spam message from a trusted source.

"Although there have been plenty of reports of Android malware, attacks targeted towards iPhone and iPad users are much much rarer," noted?Vanja Svajcer, SophosLabs principal virus researcher on that company's blog.

"Indeed, the most significant incidents we have seen of iOS attacks (the Ikee and Duh worms) only affected poorly-secured jailbroken iPhones."

Svajcer wrote that "Clearly Apple's 'rigorous' screening of apps before they're allowed in the App Store wasn't quite rigorous enough in the case of the 'Find and Call' app, as it was able to slip through the net."

Trudy Muller, an Apple spokeswoman, told Wired that the app was removed "due to its unauthorized use of users? address book data, a violation of App Store guidelines."?We contacted Apple for comment,?and will update this post if we hear back.

Svajcer of SophosLabs wrote that?it's probably "more accurate" to say that the app is " 'spammy' ?? as it leaks data all over the place in plain text via http (which means, of course, that the data could be intercepted and sniffed by someone wanting to snoop on you)."

While Apple and Google were quick to remove the app, he wrote,?"Obviously it would have (been)?even better if the app's lax respect of users' privacy had been spotted in the first place, and they had never been allowed into those online stores."

Fla. teen using insanity defense in girl's beating

(AP) ? There's no doubt that Wayne Treacy ruthlessly attacked a teenage girl more than two years ago outside a middle school, brutally kicking and stomping her head so badly she suffered permanent brain injuries. But Treacy, now 17, says he was insane when he assaulted Josie Lou Ratley and should be acquitted of attempted first-degree murder.

If convicted at a trial that begins Monday, Treacy could get 50 years in prison. If not, he likely would still spend years in a state mental institution, possibly even as long as he would spend in prison, attorneys and legal experts say.

"They often have a difficult time getting out," said attorney Richard Rosenbaum, who has represented defendants claiming the insanity defense and is not involved in the Treacy case. He said few insanity defenses succeed because defendants not only must show a mental illness or defect but also must prove they didn't know right from wrong.

"That's usually the prong that trips up most of the people who raise insanity as a defense," Rosenbaum said. "It's fairly easy for the state to show someone knew right from wrong. They knew 'Thou shalt not kill.'"

Coincidentally, the attack on Ratley happened several months after a group of students at the same school, Deerfield Beach Middle School, set a classmate on fire, nearly killing him. Three boys have been convicted of felonies in that case.

Treacy's defense claims he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, rooted in his older brother's recent suicide, when he became enraged on March 17, 2010, by an exchange of text messages with Ratley, whom he did not know. In one of the texts, Ratley tells Treacy "now go visit your dead brother," leading Treacy to respond, "You're (expletive) dead! I swear to God, I'm going to kill you. Your (expletive) is cold, dead meat."

Yet Treacy threatened Ratley several times during their 45-minute text exchange before she mentioned the brother. The whole thing started because Treacy was trying to get in touch with another girl, Kayla Manson, whom he had been dating. Ratley sometimes let Manson use her phone to contact Treacy.

Ratley repeatedly referred to then-15-year-old Treacy as a "rapist" for dating Manson, who was then 13. Eventually Treacy texts back, "Why are you trying to get yourself killed? I will find you. I will mess you up, you will regret crossing me."

And, prosecutors say, Treacy calmly laid plans to do just that over the next few hours. Evidence shows that Treacy ? a gifted student who did not attend his high school that day ? did computer searches on ways to efficiently kill people barehanded, wrote up a short will and hinted to several friends about his violent plans.

"I'm going to jail for murder," Treacy said in one text to a friend, according to investigative records.

Most of the friends said they didn't take the threats seriously.

"He's never hurt anyone before and I wouldn't think he would ever hurt someone," said Monica Montero, who received several texts from Treacy that day.

Prosecutors say Treacy dressed in black, including martial arts fighting gloves and his brother's steel-toed boots to ensure maximum damage. He then rode his bicycle to the middle school and found Manson, asking her to take him to Ratley. Surveillance video shows Manson leading the much taller Treacy through a crowd of students at the school bus stop, a few moments after Ratley also passed by. The beating itself is not captured on camera.

Numerous witnesses say Treacy grabbed Ratley by the neck, knocked her to the ground and began stomping and kicking her. A teacher managed to knock Treacy away from the girl, who was by then lying unconscious in a pool of blood. The teacher, Walter Welsh, then hustled Treacy into the school office and waited for police and paramedics to respond.

Welsh said it was clear immediately the attack was planned. "He was on a mission," Welsh said.

Later in a videotaped police interview, Treacy claimed he blacked out during the attack and that he never intended to hit Ratley. Just before the investigator came into the interview room, however, Treacy quietly says, "I'm a monster. I'm a monster."

Ratley gradually recovered but still has mental problems that prosecutors say may prevent her from testifying. Ratley's mother has an unlisted telephone number and could not be reached for comment. Manson, the girl who pointed Ratley out, faces an August trial on charges of being Treacy's accomplice.

For Treacy's insanity defense to succeed, experts say it's crucial that jurors are convinced he had been suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder for some time after his brother's suicide. In pretrial hearings, a defense expert has testified Treacy likely was in period of detachment during which he didn't know what he was doing. Those periods can last for hours or days, the expert said.

In a taped jailhouse phone call with his mother, Treacy says he is angry at his brother because the suicide messed up his head.

"If it wasn't for (unclear), I'd be just as normal as I ever was and this would never have happened," Treacy says, according to a transcript.

The prosecution's job is easier, said Nova Southeastern University law professor Robert Jarvis.

"The state has to keep reminding the jury that the defendant is (an attempted) killer," he said. "In the end, I think the defense fails in this case because lots of people lose a loved one and still function without engaging in a crime and jurors know that."

A Qualitative Examination of Pharmaceutical Business Service ...

For the Question no. 10 of the questionnaire, majority of the employees from all three companies thought that the company outsourced its services in order to lower production costs and hence maximize its profits. Out of the total of 314 responses, 110 regarded outsourcing as a means of maximizing an organisation?s profits. 66 respondents thought outsourcing as means of lowering an organisation?s costs and 44 of the respondents thought outsourcing would lead to job cuts.

As for the Question no. 11, out of the total responses 90 were in favor of China as the best destination for outsourcing business processes, followed by India with 82 responses in its favor. 58 of the respondents chose Europe as the destination where they would prefer to outsource their services. However, it was surprising to find that none of the respondents chose Middle East as their preferred destination for outsourcing. One reason for this may be cited as the lack of information among the employees regarding the recent developments in the outsourcing world.

By the responses got for the Question no. 12 it was learnt that majority of the employees had some influence on the on the selection of suppliers for their organisaton?s purchase or lease decisions on the products and services related to software and web services, while a very few respondents thought that they could determine the selection of suppliers for services related to copiers, personal computers or hardware.

For the Question no. 13 that inquired on the processes that has been outsourced by their company, 125 respondents said technical support and the better half of the total responses opting for F. that is core functions. This response brings into the light that technical support and core functions are the two main processes that are outsourced by pharmaceutical companies.

For the Question no.14, that delved with the factors that were taken into consideration when choosing a third party provider, majority of the respondents accounting to a total of 249 cited the E. option that is service provider?s commitment to outsourcing company and the service outsourced as the most important consideration. None of the respondents thought of location being a major problem when considering a third party provider. 30 of the respondents thought that while choosing a third party provider, the company would give first preference to the service provider specializing in a particular service, situated in a strategic location and who can implement the outsourced services to a number of neighboring countries.

The Question no. 15, the last of the questions that has been included in this report, asked the respondents that as a manufacturing company what specialization would they look for while choosing a third party provider. To this query majority of the respondents a total of 230 agreed with the option B. this is the third party specialising in a specific services, but who can also adapt to the changes demanded by the changing service requirements. Apart from 230 responses, 56 and 26 and 2 responses agreed with options C, D and A respectively.

Out of the total no. of responses for the Question no. 16, 83 respondents were of the opinion that in the near future if their organisation were to choose a third party service provider that specialized in many services, the ideal group of services would be option C. that is shipping and forwarding, receipt, storage and product distribution, followed by data entry, billing and technical support.

The penultimate question of the questionnaire, which asked ?as a service provider is your service specific to a certain industry,? a total of 289 respondents answered ?yes? while the remaining 31 answered no, but is in the process of expanding the service line.

As to the answer to the last query 197 respondents said yes as to their company being equipped to be a collective service providers, while 56 respondents opted for option B (no, not at the moment) and 63 with option C (no, but in the process of expanding our service line).

These were the responses got from the survey, the graphical representation of which has been cited in the appendices section of the report together with the survey questionnaire that were forwarded to all the prospective participants.

German researcher gets Starting Grant from the European Research Council

Outstanding young European investigators are encouraged to apply for an "ERC Starting Grant" of the European Research Council (ERC). Beyond the submission of an excellent research proposal, the scientists have to furnish proof of a scientific track record that has been impressive so far and continues to be very promising in the future. Dr. Markus Schubert from the Institute of Fluid Dynamics has accomplished all of this. He is the first researcher at the HZDR to be awarded with an "ERC Starting Grant."

Markus Schubert studied process engineering and earned his doctoral degree in this scientific field at the TU Dresden [Dresden University of Technology]. He joined the HZDR in 2007, intermitted by a one-year research sabbatical in Qubec/Canada. With the prospective funding from the European Research Council, he wants to set up his own research group which will focus on multiphase chemical reactors and the complex flows occurring inside them.

Many products run through chemical reactors

"A large number of products and commodities which we use every day such as, for example, low-sulphur fuels or plastics run through these chemical reactors during their production. But what does really happen inside these reactors that have been inaccessible so far because of the opaqueness due to pressure-resistant reactor walls? Is the flow adjusted in such a way that the processes run at optimal conditions? There's still a considerable need for research and that's exactly where we want to start our work. With the help of new advanced methods, we'd like to access and understand the fluid dynamics inside such reactors and, thus, further develop simulation models," says Dr. Schubert. "Eventually, the goal is to find out how these processes and systems can be designed in the best possible way to enhance the conversion of the desired products which, in turn, saves resources and energy," continues the scientist. The chemical industry is the third largest industrial branch of Germany's manufacturing industry.

Initially, Markus Schubert wants to thoroughly investigate the flows under industry-related conditions in a specific type of chemical apparatus, a bubble column reactor. In these apparatuses, gas is dispersed in liquid as homogeneously as possible for chemical conversion. The junior researcher will use the research infrastructure at the Institute of Fluid Dynamics for his experiments and visualize the flows with X-rays.

Verizon claims the U.S. Constitution gives it the right to lower your data speeds

Does the fifth amendment really give ISPs the right to throttle your bandwidth?

If the idea of an internet service provider selectively restricting your data speeds doesn't sit well, this probably won't either: Verizon feels that it should be allowed to tweak your bandwidth whenever it wants, and not only that, the company claims the U.S. Constitution gives it the right to do so.

"Net neutrality" means that an internet service provider must allow its users to access all parts of the internet at the same data speed, which is something most of us take for granted. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has been fighting for net neutrality for years now, but many companies ? like Verizon ? stand firmly in opposition of it. Verizon feels that it should be able to prioritize data speeds for its own interests, meaning that unless a site has a deal in place with the company, it may not be as easy for web users to actually load the site using Verizon's data service.

The latest and perhaps most ridiculous argument that the communications company has leveled against the net neutrality movement comes in a legal brief Verizon filed on Monday. The company claims that enforcing such a standard violates the free speech rights of its owners. What's more, Verizon likens its role in throttling certain web content to that of a newspaper editor picking what stories to run. Of course, the company makes no mention of the large chunk of pure profit it stands to gain through deals with various internet hotspots to provide adequate bandwidth.
