CAIRO (Reuters) ? Egypt lodged a formal protest to Israel on Friday over the death of three members of its security forces near the border following an attack that killed eight Israelis, and demanded an investigation into the deaths, an Egyptian army official said.
Egyptians have been enraged over the death of an army officer and two other security officials on the Egyptian side of the border while Israeli forces pursued suspected militants who had launched multiple attacks on targets in southern Israel on Thursday.
"Egypt has filed an official protest to Israel over the incidents at the border yesterday (Thursday) and demands an urgent investigation over the reasons and circumstances surrounding the death of three of Egypt's forces," an Egyptian army official told Reuters.
The circumstances of the death of the three Egyptians were not immediately clear, but the Egyptian army said the three died during an Israeli raid on fleeing militants along the border.
Israel had said the militants had come from the Hamas-run Gaza Strip through Sinai, where the Egyptian army backed by the Central Security Forces were conducting a week-long security operation to root out some 1,200 to 1,300 militants believed to be roaming North Sinai.
