Technology High School families want their own sports teams, independent from other schools, according to a survey sent out last week by the school.
The dialogue began last Tuesday when THS Principal Bruce Mims asked the school?s families to participate in a short survey about school sports, gauging whether the school?s athletes should join with another school?s teams or if the Tech High Titans should be independent.
THS athletes used to participate on Rancho Cotate High School teams, but when THS became a separate school, the students stopped participating on RCHS teams.
Nearly 76 percent of survey respondents indicated they want THS to have its own sports teams. Aside from soccer, the top three team sports students want at their school are swimming, volleyball, and track and field; basketball and cross country finished out the top of the list.
?The response is not surprising, because there are many small schools in the local area that have very successful athletic programs,? said Mims. ?Athletics, by and large, is a very important part of a well-rounded and diverse high school experience.? He added, some of the best and brightest college scholars are also exceptional athletes.
Current enrollment at the school is 219 and there were 161 respondents to the survey. Some of those who responded have more than one student attending the school.
??It?s the notion of identity, and hence, completely understandable that the school-wide community would be inclined to pursue this route,? Mims said. Adding team sports could infuse a new wave of enthusiasm and energy into the community, he explained.
Still, when considering adding team sports, the elephant in the room remains the hurdle of the local school district?s budget and its current economic constraints.
At present, Mims emphasized, entering the California Interscholastic Federation?s North Coast Section with independent team sports at THS is going to begin as a conversation this school year with a plan to offer some level of team sports by fall 2012.
Therefore, he is asking the THS parents to participate on a committee to begin a dialogue and prepare the groundwork for the planning of such an endeavor. Anyone interested in participating on the committee should send an e-mail to Mims at Bruce_Mims @crpusd.org, or call the school at 792-4825.
?I think this will be an exciting endeavor for the school-wide community,? said Mims. ?When we get to the finish line with this, I think it will add an element to our school-wide climate and culture that will certainly enhance and enrich the experiences for our students at Tech High.?
