I had a wakeup call in the emergency room on April 11, 2011, when the doctor told me my blood pressure was at 210. I went straight into a tailspin! I am a 45 year-old female, and this was a shock for me. I originally went into emergency for a minor foot injury! My family was startled when I told them that I have high blood pressure.
I wasn?t allowed to leave until my blood pressure was under control and I was immediately prescribed medication to help stabilize it. Everything has a beginning, so I thought about how I got myself into this poor state of health. I have other health issues I?m dealing with but I will concentrate on high blood pressure this time.
Well for three years I?ve stopped following my healthy regimen without realizing the future consequences:
After catching the bus and getting off at my stop, I would walk 4-5 blocks to get to my workplace. I also did my walks during lunchtime and during the fifteen minute breaks every day.
I watched what I ate. I always ate my leafy salads, vegetables, chicken, and fish and drank lots of filtered water and health juices. I took my food supplements daily.
I exercised and meditated daily at home because my job was very stressful and it helped me stay upbeat.
I limited my intake of sweets and fried foods. My weight stayed at 135 lbs.
I worked on my garden and kept up to date on the latest self-help books to maintain my health. I enjoyed doing all of these things.
Why did I stop in the first place? This is no excuse, but as I look back, I realize I didn?t handle being laid off from work very well and completely forgot to keep doing what helped me stay balanced. Now, I?ve learned my lesson.
Since I have gone back to the healthy regimen listed above, I no longer take good health for granted. This being my first experience with high blood pressure, I went ahead and did more research on it.
The first fact that I read was that people who do not exercise regularly have high blood pressure, period.?Your body loses control of metabolizing glucose and controlling insulin. You gain a lot of weight, have shortness of breath, become very fatigued and your concentration diminishes. With me I noticed, my eyesight began to diminish too, but I didn?t make the connection then. Depression sets in and is quite debilitating. I learned from a friend that her doctor informed her that depression is a constant state of discontentment.
Being healthy is paramount. I have learned that staying active, eating healthy and exercising regularly keeps illness and stagnation away. This is by no means a substitute for seeking medical recommendations of a doctor, but to share my personal view only.
